Slewing ring bearing

Ready-to-fit rolling bearing with housing rings and connection holes.

A bearing assembly is a mechanical device that allows two components or systems to rotate around a common axis while remaining connected to each other. Slewing rings are often used in industrial applications, for example to guide fluid or electrical lines through rotating machines or systems.

There are different types of bearing assemblies that are used depending on requirements and applications. Some examples are:

1. ball bearing slewing rings: These consist of an inner and outer ring rotation separated by ball bearings. They can be subjected to radial and axial loads and offer high rigidity and precision.

2. spherical plain bearing slewing rings: These consist of an inner and outer ring connected by spherical plain bearings. They can absorb a high angular displacement and axial load and offer good shock absorption.

3. fluid feed-through slewing rings: These slewing rings allow liquids or gases to pass through rotating systems. They are often equipped with seals to prevent leakage of liquids or gases.

4. electrical feed-through slewing rings: These rotary joints allow electrical signals to be transmitted through rotating systems. They can also be equipped with seals to prevent moisture or dust from entering.

Bearing assemblies can be used in various applications such as wind turbines, cranes, packaging machines, robots and many other systems where rotary motion is required.

Frequently asked questions about slewing rings

What is a slewing ring?

A slewing ring is a ready to install rolling bearing with housing rings and mounting holes. It connects two components so that one can rotate freely relative to the other while radial forces, axial forces and tilting moments are transmitted at the same time. Slewing rings are used wherever large diameters, high loads and a compact design are required.

What is the difference between a slewing ring and a standard bearing?

A standard bearing consists of inner ring, outer ring and rolling elements and must be installed in a separate housing. A slewing ring is already equipped with housing rings and mounting holes. It can be bolted directly to the design without additional housings or flanges. This saves parts, weight and assembly effort.

Which slewing ring designs does Franke offer?

Franke offers slewing rings in seven designs: ball bearing type LVA (steel), ball bearing type LVB (aluminium), angular contact ball bearing type LVC (steel, double row), ball bearing type LVD (steel, external gear teeth), ball bearing type LVE (aluminium, toothed belt profile), angular contact roller bearing type LVG (aluminium, double row) and roller bearing type LVW (aluminium). Depending on the type, bearing diameters range from 100 mm to 1,800 mm.

What applications are slewing rings suitable for?

Slewing rings are used wherever two components have to rotate against each other and high combined loads occur. Typical applications are rotary tables, robot joints, automated guided vehicles (AGV), wind turbines, cranes and lifting equipment, medical technology and security technology. At Franke, bearing diameters range from 100 mm to 1,800 mm.

How are slewing rings lubricated?

Franke slewing rings are relubricated via grease nipples according to DIN 3405. Depending on the type, Shell Gadus S3 V220 C2 or Isoflex Topas NCA52 is used as lubricant. Depending on the type, the operating temperature ranges from minus 20 or minus 30 to plus 80 degrees Celsius, briefly up to plus 100 degrees Celsius. The maximum circumferential speed depends on the type and ranges from 2 m/s to 20 m/s.
